Classroom Expectations

Be Respectful:
Every student has the right to a safe and secure classroom. Be respectful of yourself, your environment, your fellow classmates, and your teacher. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Be Responsible:
Act rationally; choose wisely. Recognize your own role in building a fun and productive community of learners. Consequences can be positive or negative.          *All school rules fall under this category*

Be Safe:
Think about where you are and whom you are with. We must guarantee against harm or injury to another. We will not tolerate any behavior that takes away from the safety of this classroom.

Be Cooperative:
At some point you will be asked to do something you may not feel like doing. Be mature and work through it. You may find that “getting there” is half the fun. Our world demands that you work well with others.

Be A Worker:
Do your job! Challenge yourself to be productive. You are here; use your time wisely.

Procedures

Homework/Assignments/Projects/Tests

  • All work must include the students name (first & last), the date the assignment is turned in, & the student’s class letter day & section
  • Work is due at the start of class unless stated otherwise.
  • Work must be printed before the bell rings so that class time is not interrupted.
  • Work that is turned in digitally must be turned in prior to the start of class time (your work will be digitally time stamped).
  • Work that is over a week late will lose 50% of the earned points for the assignment
  • When absent from class the work that was assigned prior to your absence is due the day you return to school.
  • Anytime you have an excused absence you are responsible for turning in assignments and making arrangements to get class materials and information prior to your absence.
  • Students must achieve at least an 80% or mastery on an assignment before being able to progress to the next topic in the class
  • Students must earn a score of 100% on the safety tests as directed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Assignment details will be given and it is the student’s responsibility to write down the details, and due dates. This is an important skill for students to master. A calendar with assignments and due dates is available in Canvas. These calendars are a courtesy and may not be updated with every assignment.  Students will be shown how to access these calendars.

Leaving or Entering Class After it has started:

  • You will not be excused without presenting a pass to the teacher prior to the start of class.
  • Everyone must sign in and out.
  • If you come to class after the bell rings you must present a pass from your last destination and sign in. You will not be permitted to enter without a pass from your last destination or the office.

Cell Phones

As of now cell phone are not to be used in school and until this changes this is how cell phones will be handled in the classroom.

When students enter the classroom they have three options:

1-Phones should be kept in their stored locations

2- Phones may be placed on the desk in front of the students

3- Phones may be put on the teacher’s desk until the end of class

At times students may be allowed to use their phones. Students should always ask permission before using a cellphone. Students will not be allowed to use cell phones for listening to music. If contact needs to be made with a parent please ask permission and I will send you to the office to use your phone or the school phone as per school policy. If a student uses a phone during class it will be confiscated and the progressive discipline structure will be followed. Students are encouraged to use their phones to take pictures of their work; simply ask before using your phone.

Dress Code:

All students are required to follow the dress code. Students will need to dress appropriately for work in the labs. This requires long pants and closed toed shoes. If there is a possibility of coming into contact with hot materials or irritating agents long sleeves will be required. All clothing should be of a natural fiber material if possible (wool & cotton are preferred). Clothing must fit well and cannot be baggy or loose. Eye protection and other types of protective apparel will be provided. Jewellery will have to be removed before using tools or machines.

Everyone utilizing the labs is required to wear eye protection in addition to regular glasses or contacts. Students may store clothing for lab use at school and are expected to get changed in a timely manner if they are not already dressed appropriately for class. Students who are not dressed properly will not be able to participate with class activities for the day. This will impact your ability to complete lab activities and therefore limit your ability to stay on track and achieve the outcomes of the class.

Safety Instruction/Testing

All students will be provided with safety instruction, demonstrations, and practice before taking the required safety test. All students will be tested on safety and operation of the tools and equipment used. Students must score a 100% on the safety tests according to the Department of Education. The first test will be used for the grade in the grade book. Students will do safety corrections before being able to retest. Students will have two attempts to pass the safety tests. After completing the safety tests students will complete a performance test before being able to use the machine without one-to-one supervision in the class. Teacher supervision will be present at all times in the labs for students to use the tools or machines. Students who do not pass the safety test after the second time may have their privileges for that specific piece of equipment or tool revoked.

Teacher Contact:

I will make every effort to check my email before 8pm and then again before the start of school the next morning. Please plan accordingly if you need to contact me via email. I will check my email on Sunday evening and then only as convenient throughout the rest of the weekend. Please email me @ zrudy@kasd.org. You may call 484-641-5590 and use extension 7462 to leave me a voicemail any day and time during the week. This voicemail will be transferred to my email.

Medical Concerns and Student Safety

Please ensure that the nurse is updated with all medicines and any medical conditions. To ensure the safety of the students they will not be allowed to use tools or machines if they have been diagnosed with a concussion until they have been cleared on the proper paperwork provided by the school nurse and I have received documentation. Students are encouraged to tell me if they are feeling unfocussed, distracted, or out of the ordinary so that I can adjust their lab experience for the appropriate amount of time to help ensure their safety. It is encouraged that you share any pertinent medical information with me that may influence the safety of your student in any way.

Welcome

I am excited to meet you and get to know you as we begin this class in the field of Technology & Engineering. Depending on your prior knowledge you will have the opportunity to brush up on information you have already learned, and the opportunity to extend that learning by putting new information into practice. Hopefully you will learn to think about technology in a way that you have never considered before. This year each of the classes will be putting a special focus on learning to use the Engineering Design Process, and some new tools and equipment to challenge you and show you what you are capable of accomplishing. Communication is key in this class just like it is in any job. We will work in teams to solve problems and think critically about the world around us.
